Top Officials Discuss 'Don't Ask Don't Tell'

Top officials from the Obama Defense Department sat down on February 2nd with the U.S. Senate Committee on Armed Services. Cyber-terrorism and the growing influence of the Taliban were among the topics of discussion.

The military's “don't ask don't tell” policy was one of the more attention grabbing topics of debate. The policy has drawn criticism from left and the right, as it permits homosexual to serve in the military but forbids them from disclosing their sexuality.

Adm. Mike Mullen is the nation's highest ranking military officer. He expressed to the Senate his concerns, “I cannot escape being troubled by the fact that we have in place a policy which forces young men and women to lie about who they are in order to defend their fellow citizens,” said Adm. Mullen.

The pentagon is also poised to start a yearlong study into the possibility of allowing gays to serve in the military. John McCain (R-AZ) expressed disappointment with the position of the administration and takes issues with the presumption that the policy must be changed.

Others consider the new position of the Obama Administration laudable, particularly in light of the military's role to serve and protect the people of the United States.
