In the second time in four years, RDA Holding Company, the parent of Reader’s Digest, has filed for bankruptcy. This move is intended as a financial restructure to shrink its more than $465 million in debt. RDA is hoping to exit bankruptcy with less than $100 million in debt, or 80% less than current levels.

Violence Against Women Act Passes the Senate

In a vote of 78-22, the Senate has overwhelmingly reauthorized the Violence Against Women Act. The bill sets aside $459 million for Violence Against Women programs over the next 5 years. It also expands VAWA to include new protections for LGBT and Native American victims of domestic violence, to give more attention to sexual assault prevention and to help reduce a backlog in processing rape kits.
